Feeding San Diego featured: Military Outreach Mission-San Diego (MOM-SD)

This month, we are proud to spotlight Military Outreach Mission-San Diego (MOM-SD) — a valued partner of Feeding San Diego since 2016. Spearheaded by Barbara Chavez and a team of dedicated military spouses, MOMSD provides critical food and household support to active duty military families across San Diego County.

With unwavering commitment, the team organizes food distributions five days a week, rotating through various neighborhood locations. Each site is hosted by a military family and supported by volunteers who sort, display, and share updates in their local housing Facebook groups. Within minutes, families arrive to pick up their share, bringing fresh, nutritious food directly into the community.

This grassroots effort is especially impactful for military spouses with young children or those without access to a second vehicle, who may find attending larger, centralized distributions challenging. If a host family relocates—as often happens in military life—distributions continue from MOM-SD central location in La Mesa, where they also offer clothing, diapers, toiletries, pet food, and more. By bringing vital resources closer to where families live, MOM-SD helps reduce barriers and provide much-needed support to those who serve.
