Our Goal

A Christian Service to all junior enlisted military families in gratitude for their service.

This outreach provides a practical way to lift some of the burdens on our military families and a meaningful way to say thank you for their sacrifices in service to our country. Your donations and participation as volunteers make it possible. We serve families of all faiths.

November 9, 2017 SDMOM was presented with a $15,000 check today on the deck of the Midway from the Midway Foundation.  This was made possible with the help of Dick Walker and Mary Jane Wilfong from Graham Memorial PC.  Dick arranged for Sandy Carder, Barbara Chavez and Ed Vacin to meet with the head of the Midway Foundation about 2 months ago where we were able to introduce SDMOMs to him.   At this meeting we were given information on how to apply for a grant.  Today that effort produced results.  Our heartfelt thanks to the Midway Foundation for their generosity in support of enlisted families in San Diego!

June 15th SDMOM held a Baby Shower for expectant Moms at our facilities in La Mesa. 13 Moms came and had a thoroughly enjoyable lunch, won door prizes and received brand new fully stocked baby diaper bags. Now lest you think the bags were full of new diapers - no, in addition to a package of diaper bags, there was lotion, new born blankets, baby bottles, booties, socks, hats for newborns and more.  On average, donors spend about $75 per bag.  During the year, numerous baby diaper bag drives were held at local area churches.  With a supply built up, Baby Showers were scheduled for 2017.  We're just half way through the year and more Baby Showers are scheduled.  Watch our web site for dates! Check out the Events page for photos.

May 20th the annual Patriot's Day Parade was held in Tierrasanta.  SDMOM participated in the parade and had a booth in the Tierrafest Crafts fair which took place at the conclusion of the parade.  There we raffled off a basket containing items worth over $200.  We raised $400 at this event.

May 13th our food drive sponsored by NALC (National Assoc. of Letter Carriers) took place.  We collected nearly 46,000 pounds of canned goods and dry goods.  Donations were collected by Postal workers and brought to their post offices where it was off loaded.  There, SDMOM volunteers re-loaded the food for delivery to our distribution center in La Mesa.  Our thanks to all who participated in this event.  With the food collected, we continue our ministry of providing bags of food to enlisted families, E-5 and below living in the San Diego area.

SDMOM's 3rd annual Luau took place in Tierrasanta at Ascension Catholic Church hall on Saturday, April 29th.  Over 160 gathered to support our ministry.  Photos appear on the Events page.  The Luau raised nearly $12,000 this year.  Our thanks to all who attended.

Also, in April, SDMOM was a guest of the John and Tammy Show on KSON-FM.

The show producer, Producer Steph auctioned off space on her belly.  The winner had an ad placed there.  SDMOM was the recipient of the winning bidder's amount, which came to $1400.  All in all a great event and a welcome connection with a new organization - KSON-FM.  We look forward to future events with the John and Tammy Show. A special thanks to Used Car Megastores for the winning bid!

In April, the Distribution Center reported 154 food bags given out at various locations, 465 bags of diapers, 187 Center transactions and 2 newborn layette baby gift bags provided.  Additionally, one baby shower was conducted at SRWMC on March 20th where 20 filled diaper bags were handed out.

See Events page for annual Easter Egg Hunt conducted April 8th.  Nearly 100 children were there to take part in the hunt.  Great fun by all who attended.

Also in April, SDMOM participated in a rare radio interview.  Our thanks to KSON for inviting Barbara Chavez, Executive Director for SDMOM, to the station for the interview.  More to come in a future report.

Also in February the Old Mission Rotary's Art Pratt Foundation provided SDMOM with a grant for $8,000.  These funds will be used to replace a wornout delivery van. Looking on during the presentation was Bernadette Castro, Jerry Hosenkamp, Bob Chalfa and Bob Self in the back row. Representatives from SDMOM included Judi Copeland, Sandy Carder and Barbara Chavez seen with Stan Vogelsang, Chair of the Art Pratt Foundation.  We are overjoyed at your generosity!

February, 2017 - SDMOM was blessed with 2 significant donations. Our friends from Christ The King Lutheran church lead by Walter De-felice presented a check for $20,000 to Barbara Chavez and Board member JoAn Johnson at our distribution center in La Mesa. We are so very grateful for the generosity of Christ The King Lutheran.  We will be good stewards of these funds.

January 9, 2017 - At the monthly SDMOM Steering Committee meeting, Fred Gestra was recognized for his volunteer work with SDMOM.  "Fred is always there when you need him", says Executive Director Barbara Chavez.  He works tirelessly improving our facilities, picking up donations, and assisting families at the Distribution Center.  His example is an inspiration to all who work with him.

August 10, 2016 - SDMOM has been blessed through a donation of $100,000 by a generous benefactor.  Juanita Gordon, retired Navy Nurse, knew and admired the goals of SDMOM and fully supported our mission. She planned for future financial support by including SDMOM in her will. Her generosity will help us to increase our support of enlisted families, E-5 and below in the San Diego area.  If you are passionate about supporting military families who are stationed in San Diego; if you believe their sacrifices are worthwhile and the cost of living here financially challenging for them, perhaps this is a good time to consider San Diego Military Outreach Ministries in your estate planning.  Please feel free to contact Executive Director Barbara Chavez should you wish to discuss ways you can make a difference.

August 8, 2016- Since we have many new families, we're providing some information which we hope will be helpful to you.
The Distribution Center has been open just over a year at its new location in La Mesa. For sure, it's not the same as the warehouse at Miramar!  It is smaller and although we do have a building for storage, families waiting to get in have had to endure some pretty hot days.  SDMOM has added 2 10'X10' pop-ups to provide some shade while families waited to get in.

Operating hours are 11 am to 1pm on Tuesdays.  We provide a ticket to each family. When your number is called, you can enter to shop. Numbers are selected randomly. In order to make it easier for all, we've instituted a "group of 10 shoppers" at a time.  This speeds up the process, and allows all a better chance obtaining items they need.  We ask for your patience on Tuesdays as we move each group through.  Additionally, we have made the restrooms next our office available as needed. Please keep in mind, children using the restroom must be accompanied by a parent.

June 7th, 2016, the Distribution Center reported activity for May.  167 bags of food were distributed at 6 sites.  In addition, there were 235 transactions at the Distribution Center during May. 9 Layettes were handed out to expectant mothers.

April 30, 2016, SDMOM held its 2nd annual Luau fundraiser. Over 150 tickets were sold to this event, making it a most successful evening.  The event was hosted by Faith Presbyterian Church, located next to SDSU.  The event raised over $10,000, making it the top fund raiser this year for SDMOM.  We are thankful to all who participated and/or contributed in any way.

On April 20, 2016, SDMOM Board member and co-chair for the SDMOM annual Luau visited the San Diego Padres where she picked up a generous donation from the Padres for use at the Luau fundraiser.  This event is scheduled for April 30, 2016, 6PM to 10 PM.  Location is Faith Presbyterian Church at 5075 Campanile Dr., San Diego, Ca. 92115.  Tickets are available for $25 each. Contact SDMOM at (619) 461-4164.  Come out and help us support our military families in San Diego! See Events page for photo.
